Every house on this record rests on at least one document, and each house in the tables links to the entry below for every document behind it. This page sets out how the record is built and lists the sources: 179 public documents, the building notices of 1917 to 1930, compiled by the Arroyo Casa Archive of Records from a published source of those years, and the Los Angeles County Assessor's records, matched at the same address in the same city for 860 of the 1,069 houses.
From public documents about San Gabriel Valley houses: 44 National Register documents (nominations, registration forms, record pages, and photograph and map forms), 18 surveys, inventories and evaluation reports, 95 landmark and designation records, 3 planning documents, and 19 pages from preservation groups. To those the record adds the building notices of 1917 (July to December), 1918 (January to September), 1919, 1920 and 1921 (all year), 1922 (January to June and October to December), 1923 (April to June and October to December), 1924 (January to March and October to December), 1925 (all year), 1926 (January to March and October to December), 1927, 1928 and 1929 (all year), and January and October to December 1930, printed as houses were permitted, contracted or announced and the source for 410 houses here, and a check of the Los Angeles County Assessor's records.
Each house row links to every document behind it and carries one tag for the kind of document, the first of these that applies: National Register record, landmark record, survey, planning document, or preservation group, which is a secondary source. A survey or landmark record can be a city's or the county's. When a building notice is also behind the house, a second tag says so and gives its year, and a house known only from a notice carries that tag alone. A credit is marked attributed when the documents behind it call it likely, probable, possible or attributed, or otherwise hedge it; when another document states the same credit outright, it is shown without the mark. No credit is inferred from a house's style or from a street's other houses.
Each name was read as the document printed it, and spellings were merged only where reading the records showed one person or one firm: Harry Ridgway, Ridgeway and Rideway are one man. Where two spellings may be one person but no record settles it, both stay in the register and each says so. A father and son are two people, a partnership is a firm of its own, and a name a document prints without saying which of two people it means stays as printed.
The year comes from the document when it gives one. Where the document gives none and the county record was matched, it is the county's year built when that is 1960 or earlier, and a page shows which. A county year after 1960 is taken as a newer house on the lot, and that house is shown with no year. 14 houses here have no year yet, and some are dated only to a decade. A county match counts only when its address is in the same city, with the same number and street, and the same direction where both give one. Standing means such a match with a county year built within five years of the document's year. Where the county's year is more than five years later or earlier, the house is not called standing, and the county's year is shown beside it. A later county year can mean the house was rebuilt, an earlier one can mean the document describes later work on an older house, and either can mean one of the two years is off; the record does not guess which.
Houses no document behind it reached, which is most of the valley's houses, and every house the documents reach without naming its architect: those stay in the research record and off these pages, whatever else the documents say about them. Buildings that are not houses, such as commercial buildings, bungalow courts, apartment buildings, schools and churches, are left out of the house counts and the city, neighborhood and year tables; they appear in the register and on the maker pages as part of a maker's work. And the record holds what the documents say, which can be wrong. Where a credit conflicts with a date, the record says so where it has caught it, as it does for the 1941 Arcadia house credited to Harold J. Bissner Jr., and where a document says a credit is not substantiated, as a South Pasadena packet does for two Julia Morgan claims, the record leaves it out.
I do. I'm Greg Anderson of Arroyo Casa, and the Arroyo Casa Archive of Records is the research behind the library. I built and remodeled homes for twenty years, and I read a house's record before I write a word about it. If you have a document about your house, or you find a credit here that is wrong, send it to me and I'll check it against the record.

The year built is the assessor's figure, sometimes the year a house was finished or first taxed. It confirms whether a building stands at the address, not whether it is unaltered.
